| Every afraid to put your hands or feet down for fear of the Monster? |
Why should I fear in times of trouble,
when the iniquity of those who cheat me surrounds me,
those who trust in their wealth
and boast of the abundance of their riches?
Truly no man can ransom another,
or give to God the price of his life,
for the ransom of their life is costly
and can never suffice,
that he should live on forever
and never see the pit.
(Psalm 49:5-9)
These verses give my fear-prone soul great comfort. And two phrases shouted to me when I read them. Verse 9 begins with, "Why should I fear in times of trouble"...Well, during those time of trouble my fleshly self wants to cry out, "Why not fear? Things are tough and getting tougher!" Although there are many times when I place myself in the throes of trouble, there are many others in which I am catapulted into it by the unkindness or wrongdoing of others on my behalf. Either way, I must not fear. "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10. Thank you, Lord!
The next phrase that I pondered is found in verse 7, "Truly no man can ransom another, or give to God the price of his life, for the ransom of their life is costly and can never suffice..." There is only One who can ransom a man's life, the Lord Jesus Christ. (Matthew 20:28) Yes, the ransom of my life was costly, and only through Him could it suffice. Because of Him I will never see the pit. Because of Him I can be secure and unafraid of what lies ahead. Hallelujah!
As you begin 2012, I urge you to be assured that your life has been ransomed by the Only One who can ransom a soul. Read the book of Luke. Consider the cost of trying to ransom your own soul.

I think that verse from Isaiah should be my life verse
We're going through the book of Luke verse by verse on Sundays. What amazing truths these are, that we need not fear and that only Christ can ransom a life. Let's pray that we remember this even when we are in the midst of it - which is always the tough part. And I think that's where the Body of Christ comes in - where we pray for one another.
